Settling In Programme

When your child has been offered a place at the Centre you will receive a parent’s pack and we will arrange a settling in programme. We encourage parents/carers to attend the centre with their child as many times as it takes to ensure your child feels happy to be left and settle down to the daily routine.

Children feel and show a range of emotions when starting in the Centre, they may be excited, distressed, angry or curious, every child is different. Our staff are experienced in handling all of these reactions.

We always work with parents to ensure settling in is as happy as possible. We also encourage parents to accompany their child on a visit to the Centre before they start.

Staff will draw on their professional experience, whilst recognising that you are the expert where your child is concerned and will discuss your child’s settling in plan with you.

Health and Illness

Children will settle, enjoy and receive the greatest benefit from their time with us if they are feeling well and all staff seek to take appropriate and caring measures when children are ill.

We aim to promote the health and hygiene arrangements for children and take positive steps to prevent the spread of infection. We have a Health and Illness Policy.

If you do not wish your childs clothes to get dirty then please bring along a change for them. Comfortable old clothes are better. We try to plan as much outdoor activity as the weather will allow, please send your child with warm clothes and a coat in the cooler months. Aprons are provided for messy play.

On hot sunny days please send your child in clothes to protect them from the sun, including a hat. We do have sun hats that we insist on children wearing if they do not bring their own. Please supply sun cream for your child on sunny days. Please make sure all your childs items such as lunch box, drinks containers, coats and clothing are marked with their name.

Toys and Valuables

Please do not bring in items of great monetary or sentimental value. Whilst we will endeavour to return all items, occasionally items are lost and unfortunately Pelican Childrens
Centre cannot be held responsible for them.

Snacks and Drinks

Water will be accessible to children at all times.
Healthy food tasters are given to the children during snack session.

Allergies/cultiral requirements

If your child has any allergies/intollerances or strong dislikes, please inform us on their enrolment form or in person. If there are any foods or drinks you would not like your child to eat, drink or prepare, please let us know. This is important especially if cultural beliefs are to be taken into consideration.

The centre requests that parents approach the Centre along Saltash Road and then turn into the street outside the centre. Please park courteously in the street and back lanes as there are residents who require access to garages.
After you have dropped off or picked up your children please leave along the back lanes which lead to Admiralty Street. This is a requirement set out by the planning department when we first purchased the property.

Local Community

The Centre has excellent relationship with the local community groups and we work with the schools to make transfers less stressful. .
